2018/2019 Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students

University of Shanghai for Science and Technology is an engineering-based municipal key university with multidisciplinary blend of science, management, economics and literature. It has been over one hundred years since its inception. The university originates from Shanghai College founded in 1906 and German Medical School founded in 1907. With a glorious history of over 100 years and an incessant tradition of outstanding education, USST had cultivated a great number of young patriots with high ideals, academic elites, engineering specialists and social tops, providing the country and society with more than 100,000 professionals. It has enjoyed the reputation of “Whampoa Military Academy in Manufacturing Industry”.

 

USST administers 2 types of international students scholarship offered by the Shanghai Municipal Government in an attempt to encourage excellent international students and scholars to study at USST.


I. Types of scholarship and who shall apply

Type A (full scholarship)

It is granted to excellent international students who will apply for Master/Doctor degree program in USST

Type B (partial scholarship

It is granted to excellent international students who will apply for Bachelor/Master/Doctor degree program in USST


II. The scholarship contains:

Type A (full scholarship)

Students who are granted the type A scholarship will be exempt from tuition, International Students Apartment Fees and comprehensive medical insurances. 

Type B (partial scholarship

Students who are granted the type B scholarship will be exempt from tuition and comprehensive medical insurances.

III. Prerequisites of the applicants

1. Non-Chinese citizen in good health

2. Applicants pursuing Bachelor’s degree shall hold High School degree diploma or the equivalent and should be under the age of 25. In addition, the applicant can only apply for Type B scholarship.

Applicants pursuing Master’s degree should hold Bachelor degree diploma or the equivalent and should not be over the age of 35.

Applicants pursuing Doctor’s degree should hold Master degree diploma or the equivalent and should not be over the age of 40.

3. The applicants should have excellent academic records.

4. The applicants should be in default of any other Chinese government scholarship.

5. Those overseas applicants who were nationals of the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan must have held the valid foreign passport or certificate of nationality for at least four years, and over two years (nine-month actual residence in foreign countries within one year can be calculated as one year, subject to the entry and exit date) of the actual abroad residence record within the last four years.

IV. When to apply and how to apply,application fees


Type A (full scholarship)

Application of type A will be processed by the university from March 1, 2019 to Jun 15th, 2019.

List of Application material for easy reference:

1. Application Form for Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS) Class Afilled in Chinese or English

2. Notarized copies and Chinese or English translations of your highest education certificate, including graduation and degree certificates. Verification letter from school or employer should be provided if the applicants are students or employed. Those who submitted pre-guaduation certificate will be required to provide original graudation certificate on registration day.

3. Notarized official transcripts of study records in Chinese or English. Chinese or English translations of the transcripts should be notarized too.

4. Study Plan in China in Chinese or English

5. Letter of Recommendation in Chinese or English from two professors or associate professors from the institution where the applicants have completed or will complete study program

6. Copy of Chinese language proficiency test result of new HSK 5 or above (for students will take programs taught in Chinese only);

7. Students who apply for art programs should provide their works;

8. Copy of valid passport if available.

9. Guardian's Letter of Guarantee is required for applicants under 18 years old.

All materials as mentioned above will not be returned.


Type B (partial scholarship

Application of type B will be processed by the university from March 1, 2019 to Jun 15th, 2019.

V. Processing and Final Results

Final results of the scholarship evaluation process will be publicly notified in each July and November and an official certificate will be issued to each winner.


VI. About Visa for Study in China and Registration Formalities of Scholarship Winner

1. Visa for study in China

The winners of Scholarship type A and type B who directly come to Shanghai from abroad should apply for the student visa (for students who will study for over 6 months, “X” visa should be applied) to the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country with original and copy of Admission Notice, Visa Application for Study in China (JW202), Foreigner Physical Examination Form, Scholarship Award Notice and valid passport.

2. Registration

If any scholarship winner fails to register within the time limit without the permission of the institution, he/she will be regarded as giving up the admission and the scholarship.

3. Health certificate and residence permit

Students with scholarship should bring along Foreigner Physical Examination Form and go to the Shanghai Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau International Travel Health Center for verification. If they do not have health verification from the center, they should take physical examination till they receive a Health Certificate from the said center. Anyone who refuse the physical examination or enter China with certain diseases that will be rejected as regulated by the Chinese laws and regulations will be requested to leave China within limited days and the scholarship will be canceled accordingly. The relevant expense is on the said students. The lodging and living allowance funds from Scholarship A will be stopped from that month.

Students with scholarship should apply for the Residence Permit to the Exit-Entry Bureau of Shanghai Police Station within 30 days from the date they enter China.


Please go through all the procedures of registration to the institution and apply within thirty days of arrival for the residency permit to the local police authority.

Please make health check reservation at least one month before your arrival in Shanghai (website for reservation:http://sithc.shciq.gov.cn/MEC/login)and reservation is not necessary for students as followed:

a. holding a valid residence permit
b. holding a residence permit expired more than 3 months ago
