2026 Academic Newcomers Entry and Visa Application Guidelines

Dear incoming students who will begin degree-persuing studies in the fall of 2026,

1. Students currently outside China (hereinafter, within China and outside China refer to within or outside the territory of China; entry and exit refer to entering or leaving China) may apply for an X1 student visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate in their home country using a valid passport, admission letter, visa application form (JW201 or JW202), and passport photo, etc. Visa requirements vary by country; please consult your local Chinese diplomatic mission for specific details. We recommend that students do not enter China earlier than three days before the official enrollment date.

Important Notes:
a. Entry under visa-free policies is not permitted. If you have entered China under a visa-free arrangement, you must first exit China, apply for an X1 visa, and then re-enter.
b. Entry on a tourist visa is not allowed. If you have entered China on a tourist visa, you must first leave China, apply for an X1 student visa, and then re-enter.

Notes for Students arriving before the enrollment date : after entry, temporary accommodation registration must be completed within 24 hours, and a residence permit must be applied for within 30 days of entry. First-time entrants, those departing for more than three months, or those whose previous residence permit has expired for over three months must reserve a medical examination prior to applying for a study residence permit. Only after passing the medical examination can the residence permit application proceed. For details about the medical examination, please visit: http://iso.usst.edu.cn/9491/list.htm (Visa Guide). You may bring the original pre-entry medical report for verification; if verified, certain tests may be waived. Please allow at least three working days after the examination to receive the medical report (you may arrange express delivery of the report upon completion of the examination).

For any inquiries regarding post-entry visa matters, please contact the visa processing officer via WeChat ID: qqkefang. After successfully adding the WeChat account, please provide your full name, a photo of your passport information page, and a photo of your passport valid visa page.

2. For new students already in China: during the summer vacation of 2026, the university will offer special convenience services for students remaining in China. On the following dates—Wednesday, July 29; Thursday, August 6; Wednesday, August 12; Thursday, August 27; Friday, August 28; Thursday, September 10; and Friday, September 11—the university will hold additional “Certificate Application Letter” processing sessions from 9:00–11:30 and 13:00–16:00. Before attending, students must prepare a temporary accommodation registration form (with Shanghai address; if none is available, students may first be guided to apply for Registration Form of Temporary Residence on campus. Processing location: Room 318, Qin Ye Building, No. 580, Jungong Rd., Shanghai. Whatsoever, new students should find place to accommodate out of campus by their own  and bear the expenses

a. On the day of service, students must first submit original enrollment documents to the admissions officer at Room 318, Qin Ye Building for verification.
b. After successful verification, if necessary, follow the university’s on-site guidance to apply for  Registration Form for Temporary Residence.  

c. After settling with  Registration Form for Temporary Residence, please submit the following documents to the visa officer: admission letter, JW202 form or JW201 form, original passport (including valid stay visa, X2 visa, or residence permit), temporary accommodation registration form (Shanghai address), graduation certificate/attendance certificate, or a leave-of-absence certificate issued within 10 days prior to departure (students holding a T visa are exempt from submitting this document).

The university will issue an Application Letter for newly admitted students enabling them to apply for a 30-day stay T visa or a study-type residence permit valid till September 30, 2027. For those applying for T visa in August, should go to Room 318, Qin Ye Building again in Septermber, before the expiry date of T visa, apply for an Application Letter to apply the study-type residence permit valid till September 30, 2027.

Note: Processing a residence permit takes seven working days at the Shanghai Exit-Entry Administration Bureau . The immigration authorities do not provide express delivery services for documents if the applicant's address is outside Shanghai. During the processing period, new students may not leave China, but they may travel domestically using the receipt provided by the immigration office.

The opening dates for international student dormitories will be announced separately by the admissions officer. It is recommended that new students return to their home country first to apply for an X1 visa and enter the campus on the official enrollment date. Students who choose not to return home and need to process their visa during summer vacation should add the teacher’s WeChat account in advance by July 15 to make an appointment. WeChat ID: qqkefang. No appointments will be accepted after this date.

3. For students who will arrive on the official registration date, the university will uniformly verify original enrollment application materials, check visa and residence documents, confirm whether a medical examination is required, and issue the Application Letter on the registration date or afterward.
