Notice on Implementing the Requirements of the Ministry of Education for the Cultivation of International Students' Language Competence

The Quality Standard of Higher Education for International Students in China (Trial) issued in 2018 by the Ministry of Education, is a quality standard document formulated for the education of international students in China. The document lists language ability as one of the four goals for talent cultivation. Abiding by the quality standard,tThe specific requirements are as follows:


In disciplines and majors where Chinese is used as the professional teaching language, international students should be able to successfully complete the study and research tasks of the discipline and major in Chinese, and have the ability to use Chinese to engage in relevant work of the major; Upon graduation, Chinese proficiency should reach Level 5 of the International Standard for Chinese Proficiency, that is, HSK Level 5.

 

In disciplines and majors in which foreign language is used as the teaching language, international students should be able to successfully complete the study and research tasks of the discipline and specialty in the corresponding foreign language, and have the ability to use the corresponding foreign language to engage in the work related to the specialty. At the time of graduation, undergraduates should have at least reached the Level 4 of the International Standard for Chinese Language Proficiency, that is, passed HSK Level 4. Master's and doctoral students should have at least level 3 of the International Standard of Chinese Proficiency, that is, HSK Level 3.
